Romanian prosecutors filed fresh charges against Andrew and Tristan Tate on Sept. 4.

Why it matters: The new indictment expands the brothers' legal exposure in Romania while they also fight separate UK allegations. The case now spans multiple jurisdictions and adds pressure to a high-profile figure with a large online audience.

  • Romanian prosecutors in Bucharest filed a new indictment on Sept. 4, 2026.
  • Andrew Tate is charged with trafficking minors, sex with a minor, money laundering and witness tampering.
  • Tristan Tate is charged with complicity in some of the alleged offenses.
  • The UK Crown Prosecution Service said July 19, 2026 that the brothers face additional sexual-offence charges and are awaiting extradition proceedings in the United States.

Romanian prosecutors in Bucharest filed a new indictment against Andrew Tate and Tristan Tate, adding fresh allegations to an already sprawling legal case. The new filing charges Andrew Tate with trafficking minors, sex with a minor, money laundering and witness tampering, while Tristan Tate faces complicity allegations in some of those offenses, according to AP.

Reuters reported that prosecutors say the latest indictment includes claims that victims were paid or intimidated to keep quiet or give false statements. Defense lawyer Eugen Vidineac said the brothers would challenge any legal or evidential defects. He said, "We will examine every aspect of (the indictment) with the same level of scrutiny and we will challenge any evidential, procedural or legal deficiencies through the appropriate judicial process." Romania's DIICOT said the case file has been sent to a preliminary chamber judge, who must review it for legality before the case can move forward, according to AGERPRES.

The Romanian case is separate from the brothers' UK case. On July 19, 2026, the Crown Prosecution Service said it would prosecute them for additional sexual offences and said they had been arrested in the United States and were awaiting extradition proceedings to the UK. A CPS statement said, "The suspects were arrested by the US Marshal Service in the United States of America on July 18, 2026. They have been arrested and await extradition proceedings to the UK." The BBC said the Romanian charges add to a widening legal tangle that now includes the separate extradition fight in the United States over the UK allegations. BBC

By the numbers

  • Sept. 4, 2026 - Romanian prosecutors filed the new indictment.
  • July 19, 2026 - the UK Crown Prosecution Service announced additional sexual-offence charges.
  • July 18, 2026 - the brothers were arrested in the United States, per the CPS.

Yes, but: The Romanian filing still has to clear a preliminary chamber judge's legality review before the case can advance.

What's next: A Romanian preliminary chamber judge will review the indictment for legality. The UK extradition proceedings in the United States are also ongoing.
